firstly sorry if posting in the wrong place, have no idea about all this.

secondly i am practicing on the free trial of photoshop before committing but im finding that when i follow video tutorials i cant do it because it wont let me is this because its the free trial?

i have my background picture and a cloud layer over the top, the video shows me to use the rectangular marquee tool under the move tool. video shows to click on it and them click on my cloud layer and drag the rectangle out to select a part of that layer. Problem is i cant do that. i click on the tab then click on my layer but the rectangle will not drag out and so i can not select a section of my layer to use like it shows in the video.

please help i am completely new to all this

I have no idea, I can't even imagine why it wouldn't work, is there any way you can take a screen shot of the tool when it's selected, or record it for us to see?
