So I have been tasked by my department to create some posters to showcase our work. I created a standard (8.5 x 11) design to start with and now I'm working on the actual image that will be sent to the printer. Since I want to make a 24" x 36" poster with 300 dpi, the image is somewhere in the 7000 x 10000 pixel range (Quite large, I know). When I attempt to do filters on any of the layers, I get an error message saying that there was not enough space to complete the operation. I have 2 GB of ram and plenty of hard drive space, what should I do?

FYI, I'm actually using Photoshop Elements if that makes a difference.

Contact your printer and ask them what they need. You can probably work at 1/4 the size of the finished poster at 300 dpi.
