hi, i'm new to this forum, and by now i'm starting to become desperate for some help.. i'm trying to make a new brush from a scanned photo. now i've done this before, and never had a problem, but it seems that with this particular picture, i can't. i've selected it, erased the background, turned it to grayscale etc.. looked in the tutorials, help, in many many forums.. i made sure the feathers were turned to 0, and the option "define brush preset" remains untouchable.
please, could you tell me what my problem is?
thanx in advance.. and surely after Big Grin

I have tried to duplicate the problem.
Here's what I came up with.

Starting with a 300 dpi NEF file

If your image is 16 bit channel no options should work.

Converting the image from 16 bit to 8 bit
only 'define pattern' was available. (still at 300 dpi)

Reducing my image to 72dpi
'define brush' and 'define pattern' are available.

Confused

oh thank you so much for answering, suddenly i don't feel so lonely Big Grin i did what you said and converted my image to a smaller resolution, and tatan!! it worked. now i can define brush, but still i don't understand why, since i usually work in 300 dpi... or maybe i never noticed that i reduced it... anyway, it works, so again i reaaaaaally thank you so much :P

Hey no problem, wasn't sure I could come up with anything for you.
I searched the help files in PS but couldn't seem to find anything that seemed to clarify this.
Perhaps you could get a hold of Adobe and see if there are any guidlines for 'define brush'.
Anyways glad I could help.
