for whatever reason when doing quick mask the entire image is selected when i go back to standard mode instead of selecting what i painted in quick mask??

Double click on the quick mask button and make sure that the option box has "colour indicates selected areas" checked, not "colour indicates masked areas".
It is a masking tool by default , hence the name, not a selection tool although this is reversible.
