Hi all,

I've not had much luck finding the answer to this question (and I apologise in advance if it is a confusing/stupid question), but hopefully it is something simple.

Is there any way of saving a photoshop raw file to retain a transparent background? I've read someone say online that they have done exactly this - saving any kind of transparent image as a raw file, but I can't figure it out.

One thing to note is that I am using other file types initially, and putting transparent sections into them and saving as photoshop raw (which appears to be the only option in my photoshop's drop down list with the word 'raw' in it) - these aren't initially RAW files imported from my camera, as I have to use files found elsewhere.

I'm running CS6 on OS X 10.7.5.

The reason why I am doing this is because I am then importing the file as 'raw data' into Audacity - the simple sound recording program. But because the files aren't saving as transparent, Audacity doesn't seem to be reading the data the way I would like it to - because it can't properly pick up the shape. I know that Audacity will import other things as raw data as well, and have tried with .psd, but that doesn't seem to give the right effect either, and this person was specifically saying 'RAW files'. But if anyone can think of a good alternative I would be all ears. :)

Cheers
Alinta

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Stand by your beds, because I'm flying on a wing and a prayer a bit. I think that Camera RAW below version 8 does not support Alpha Transparency, above version 8 (current version I think is 8.3) does support it in DNG files at least.

HERE is the update page to download Camera RAW 8.3.

Not sure if this will get you a little further, but here's hoping!
