I have recently started working with textures and patterns. Currently I am trying to work up a rusted metal pattern. I have seen an example on the web that I was really impressed with.
Rust Image
What I am looking for is a way to apply a random pattern. So far every technique I've looked at applies its effect at the pixel level and is therefore too "fine" for the effect I'm trying to achieve. Actually as you can see in the example there are shapes with ragged and irregular edges. I'm thinking this is more specifically what I'm needing to learn a technique for achieving. It is something that would have countless applications. I've done similar thing starting with a photo of some surface and used it for a channel to map to a layer and then apply lighting effects to it, but it would be really nice if there were a way to do this with the brush tools. I would allow more flexibility for creating the pattern.
I have been using Photoshop for years but always a limited set of tools. Textures and patterns is new ground for me.
Is what I'm trying to do in fact doable If so, how would I go about doing it? |

Whilst it's not a pattern in it's entirety.
Open a new document to required size. Create a new channel layer and then run Filter>Render>Clouds. Pull up Levels Adjust and bring the black and white sliders into the middle (to suit), you will see the effect that you get. You can Ctrl click it to make it a selection and then use in your texture work.
Hope that helps a little and welcome to the forums ronc. _________________ If life serves you lemons, make lemonade! |
