Hello all...

We've formed a nonprofit in support of the good cause (democrats, of course), and are about to launch our product (see attached).

Anyway, doing the web work ourselves, of course.

The attached image is going to be used on the site, and so I need to
a) remove the background so it is transparent
b) put it in the correct format for the web.

Can you help us out?

Guidelines of this forum suggest offering something for freebie needs like this, so I offer you a band (or a few).

The picture/file is located here:

Cheers,
Chris

PS - I would really like to know how to do this - I've tried to figure it out myself but it seems like people use different strategies and I think there is probably a 'best way' to do this.

If you could explain how you did it, that would be really helpful as we will be shooting more pics and I will need to repeat the process.

I am decent working with photoshop and paint shop pro.

Thanks very much for your time!

next time, also take the photo on a white background or something, something solid, not with 100 colors

just a tip for editing

Thanks Fission...how'd you do it?

It looks good, but I'm hoping to get it down better so it doesn't have the jagged edge look.

So basically it's a manual pixel by pixel process, or is there a better way.

I took it on a white background, but with shadowing, that's what I got.

Thx very much...

Wow witam, that's awesome!

How did you do it? Just pixel by pixel? Please let me know, so I can do it myself next time.

Site isn't up yet...but hopefully it will be nice!

No not pixel by pixel.. i'm the lazy type in things like this, so i use the tools provided with photoshop. This takes less than 2 minutes to do.

First i used color range to get a broad selection of the ring (see this topic for more explanation: http://www.photoshopforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=1641&highlight=color+colour+range)
This resulted in a nice upperselection of the ring, but too much on the bottom. Since this was good enough for the first step i inversed the selection and just hit delete.

Now there is much less stuff to take care off...

Next step: zoom in to about 200% and take your polyganol lasso tool. I only need to take care of the lower part of the ring, so i just use this tool to follow the border of the ring. When i get to the end of the ring i go to the bottom of the image and back to the other side, followed by going up again towards my starting point. Now i have all the excess stuff selected, but this tool creates some squary lines to appear. We want the ring to be smooth. So select/modify/smooth (i think i used 7 pxl if i remember correctly and you have a smooth edge. Now again delete.. and you're done.

Hope this helps..

Thanks again witam...that seems like something I can do again.

By the way, is there an easy way to convert what is now a solid white background to a transparent background? There must be...

yes there is.. select it and delete it.. To keep it transparant to put on a webpage you need to save it as a gif-file.
