I use photoshop all the time but for some reason something has changed and now when i select an area and clear it, instead of just erasing the part i selected, it does it like a fade and bleeds all over into the non selected area. its so bizzare, i have no idea how to change it, why is photoshop all of a sudden not respecting the boundary of the selection?

any help would be very much appreciated.

Have you got the selection tool set to feather the selection?
