What does lock transparency do in the layers tab, as indicated in the below image.

"Lock transparent pixels" locks all transparent pixels within the layer and only allows colored pixels to change when tools or filters are used on that layer. Try it ... create a new layer and fill it with a color (or an image). Now, select part of that layer and delete what's in the selection. Then click the "Lock transparent pixels" button and try to paint over that transparent area. See link below...

Thanks Patrick,
I think it's great the way you take the time to welcome new folks to PF and often compliment those who try to help them. I'm active of several forums and this is the only one where the administrator is that thoughtful. I know I speak for all the regulars here at PF when I say that you are appreciated!
